Magaliesberg ZT/GP-001

Der Magaliesberg ist eine Gebirgskette westlich von Pretoria in den Provinzen Nordwest und Gauteng. Es gibt dort eine SOTA Referenz, die ist aber nicht der höchste Punkt und schwierig zu aktivieren; denn es handelt sich um ein privates Naturschutzgebiet mit deftigen Warnungen am Gate, das Gelände bloss nicht zu betreten.
The Magaliesberg is a mountain range west of Pretoria in the provinces of North West and Gauteng. There is a SOTA reference that is not the highest point and difficult to activate; there is a private nature reserve with cracking warnings at the gate, not merely to enter the premises.
Eddie (ZS6BNE), Andries (ZS6VL) und ich haben uns also entschlossen den „Highest Point“ zu aktivieren, das ließ sich auch einfacher organisieren, da der „Highest Point“ auf der Nooitgedacht Game Ranch mit dem Ingwe Bush Camp liegt (dort trifft man auf allerlei exotische Tiere).
Am Bushcamp haben wir Colin getroffen. Ein sympathischer junger Mann, wie er bei Daktari mitspielen könnte. Buschhut mit Zebrahutband, am Gürtel eine Pistole tragend, hat er sich geduldig aber interessiert erklären lassen, was Amateurfunk ist und was wir am Berg vorhätten. Nachdem dann jeder 150 Rand (ca. 11,50€) „abgedrückt“ hat, durften wir also los.
Immer wieder kreuzen Paviane unseren Weg und nach etlichen „Gates“ geht es durch den „Busch“ zum Startpunkt

At the bushcamp we met Colin. A personable young man as he could play at Daktari. Bushhat with Zebrahatband, on a belt carrying a gun. He listened patiently but interestend what amateur radio is and what we will do on the mountain. Then, after each payed 150 Rand (about € 11.50) , we were allowed to go.

Faszinierend, 40m ist in ZS genauso ruhig, als ob man hier in EU auf 2m SSB funkt. Mit 5w sind dort 4 QSOs kein Problem und so hatte Andries schnell sein Log voll.
Eddie und ich haben abwechselnd auf 10m gefunkt. Wie gewohnt ging zur Mittagszeit das
Band Richtung Europa auf. Als erstes war wieder Uli, DM5EE mit S9+ im Log. Dann
meldete sich noch OM Abraham mit dem exotischen Rufzeichen 9Q5/HJ1NGE aus dem Kongo. Noch ein paar QSO und ich hatte den Berg qualifiziert und habe mich dann zu Eddie und Andries gesellt um zu sehen, wie sie den Funkverkehr abwickeln.
Eddie war ganz begeistert, wieviele Stationen anriefen. Etliche bekannte Chaser-Rufzeichen aus der GMA Gemeinde haben ihn angerufen und sind im Log gelandet. Er meinte, er liebe es mit DLs zu funken, die haben alle eine ausgezeichnete Betriebstechnik.
Fascinating, 40m is in ZS just as calmly like 2m here in EU. With 5w in SSB there are 4 QSOs no problem on a Saturday morning and so Andries had its log fills up quickly.
Eddie and I worked on 10m. As usual the band openend around noon towards Europe. The first QSO was Uli, DM5EE with S9 + in the log. Then OM Abraham answered my CQ with the exotic callsign 9Q5 / HJ1NGE from DR Congo. Another few QSOs and I had qualified the mountain and then I joined Eddie and Andries to see how they handle the QSOs.
Eddie was very excited, how many stations called. Several well-known Chaser callsign from the GMA community have called him. He said that he loved to operate with DLs, because they all operate excellent.

Besuch bei Hitradio Namibia
Als Funkamateur hat man ein natürliches Interesse an allem, was mit Funk zu tun hat. Darum hatte ich bei Hitradio Namibia angefragt, ob ich mir mal das Studio ansehen dürfe. Hitradio Namibia ist ein deutschsprachiger UKW-Privatsender, den man in Deutschland natürlich auch per Internetstream hören kann. Beim Besuch habe ich berichtet, was ich in Namibia so mache, außer Sightseeing. Das klang offensichtlich interessant genug, dass Frau Moldzio gleich ein Interview über Amateurfunk mit mir machte. Schon am nächsten Morgen wurde es ausgstrahlt. Perfekt gemacht! Das war ein toller Besuch bei einem Profi-Sender 😉
Castles On The Air: Curt von François-Feste V5-00005

Etwa 50km westlich von Windhoek, der Hauptstadt Namibias, liegt die „Curt von François-Feste“. Von François war Offizier der deutschen Schutztruppe in der ehemaligen Kolonie Deutsch-Südwestafrika und er gründete 1890 Windhoek. Das Fort ist eine Ruine eines militärischen Lagers mit einer Grundfläche von etwa 8×10 Metern und liegt auf einem Hügel. Es diente als Aussichtsposten zur Überwachung der Handelsroute zwischen Swakopmund und Windhoek.
Heute ist das Fort, das unter Denkmalschutz steht, teilweise verfallen. Lediglich die aus einzelnen, aufeinander gelegten Schiefersteinen bestehenden Innen- und Außenwände sind noch erhalten.
About 50km west of Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, the „Curt von François-Fortress“ is located. Von François was officer of the German colonial force in the former German colony of South-West Africa and founded in 1890 Windhoek. The fort is a ruin of a military camp with a floor area of about 8×10 meters and is situated on a hill. It served as an observation post to monitor the trade route between Swakopmund and Windhoek.
Today the fort is a listed building, partially forfeited. Only the inner and outer walls are still standing.
Funkbetrieb wurde nur auf 28 MHz gemacht. Als Antenne diente nun wieder die MP-1 Antenne, mit der ich in den Tagen zuvor schon gute Erfahrungen auf dem 10m Band gesammelt hatte. Das Band war gegen 14.00 Uhr Ortszeit (= 12.00 UTC) gut nach Europa offen. Allerdings herrschten dann auch Temperaturen weit über 30 Grad und man muss sich ein schattiges Plätzchen suchen.
Radio operation was made only at 28 MHz. The antenna was again the MP-1 antenna with which I had in the previous days already good experience on the 10m band. The band was around 14.00 local time (= 12:00 UTC) well open to Europe. But then in this area were temperatures above 30 degrees and I had to look for a shady spot.
Kudu Hiking Trail
This was no special activation for any reference, this was just fun in the sun and a RaDAR-style operation. However, nature loves CW and headphones … a lot of visitors stopped by while I was sitting under a shady tree doing some morse-telegraphy. This was a nice day for nature and HAM Radio.

Bullshead Hiking Trail

Die erste Bergaktivierung führte mich über den „Bullshead Hiking Trail“ zum Bullenkopf. Durch die Regenfälle der letzten Tage war der Wanderweg teilweise matschig oder aber, durch den Lehmboden, rutschig wie Glatteis. Auch musste ich ein wasserführendes Rivier durchqueren, etwa knietief. Angesichts der Hitze machte das nicht so viel aus. Nur der glitschige Lehmboden zollte seinen Tribut: die Hose musste zum Trocknen in die Dornenbüsche gehängt werden.

Der ansonsten sehr gut markierte Wanderweg verliert sich hier im Rivier und so musste ich die Wanderung durch das dornige Buschland fortsetzen bis ich schließlich nach ein paar hundert Metern wieder auf den Wanderweg traf. Am Bullenkopf angekommen ging es gleich steil hinauf. Bei ungewohnten weit über 30°C im Januar erstmal sehr mühsam. Die letzten Meter bis zur Bergkuppe hätte man klettern müssen, aber zum Glück befand sich eine schattenspendende Höhle, die Buschmannhöhle, schon in der Aktivierungszone.

Die Bänder waren, wie schon an den Tagen vorher, nahezu tot. Die MP-1 Antenne stimmte ich auf 28 MHz ab und überließ der CQ-Automatik meines Code Cubes die Arbeit.

Mangels Handy-Empfang konnte ich auch keine SMS zum GMA-Server absetzen oder per WhatsApp bescheidsagen: ich bin da. Plötzlich meldete sich eine Station und das erste QSO war mit HA8JP (Ungarn) im Log. Dennoch dauerte es 10 weitere Minuten bis sich SP2CQF aus Polen meldete. Nach weiteren 10 Minuten schien sich das Band zu öffnen und es kamen Schlag auf Schlag knapp 40 Verbindungen (QSOs) zustande. Alles DX (long distance), alles Europa. Das war ein super Start und so konnte ich zufrieden den Rückweg antreten.

V5/DL4MFM from Namibia
End of January 2015 I travelled to V5 Namibia. Amateur Radio goal for this journey was to activate some references for GMA, WWFF and WCA (Castles). But at first: setting up my station at the Guest Farm in the Naukluft Mountains. The conditions on 20/30/40m were very poor. But surprisingly I reached my long-time HAM radio friend Felix DL5XL / DP1POL – at his QTH (location) at the german antarctic base Neumayer III in digital JT65 mode.

A lot of VHF contests are on the first tuesday in a month across Europe. Tonight Klaus, DH5KLI, and I met on the „Venner Berg“ (GMA DA/NI-096). Also Christian, DO7AG, joined us. We installed 2 (!) 144 MHz stations in a distance of about 50m. I was on the 20m high outlook tower with 4x Oblong and FT 817 plus PA ~25w output. Klaus used at the car park a FT 897 with 20w and also a 4xOblong. Of course we had problems with interferences but funnily other station in umpteen 10km distance caused more problems! ODX of Klaus and me was SK7MW near Malmö with an ODX of 466km. WX: dry, overcast, 2°C.

11-JAN-2015 – DARC 10m Contest – DM/NS-108 Piesberg
In the DARC 10m Contest I only wanted to check my portable station for upcoming holidays and try a new antenna. WX was dry but cold and very very stormy. At 10:10 UTC was the station ready and I started my first CQ. After a short time were 10 stations in the log. After 10 QSO I wanted to QSY to 40m but a lot of stations called and so I made qrt after 20 QSOs. Surprisingly only a few stations from Germany were in the log.
In the North I heard a thunder storm and so I decided to make QRT. I will test the new multiband-dipole next weekend.
Quick I packed the rucksack and left the stormy summit. When I was back at the car it started raining …

OZ7CCC/p on OZ/OZ-006 Agri Bavnehøj

Silvester 2014: wie schon 2011 war auch 2014 die letzte Aktivität des Jahres OZ/OZ-006. 137m hoch in den Mols Bjergen nahe Aarhus gelegen. Der Morgen versprach erst kein gutes Wetter, doch dann riss die Wolkendecke auf und strahlender Sonnenschein empfing mich auf der Kuppe. Jedoch auch ein sehr starker Wind. Das Stativ der MP-1 Antenne musste zusätzlich am Picknicktisch mit einem Gummispannband gesichert werden.
Der Funkbetrieb auf 40m lief nicht so flüssig wie erwartet. Zwar hatte ich teils gute Signale empfangen, aber meine Rapporte waren nicht so toll. Der FT-817 mit der ungarischen PA lieferte wohl nicht die gesamte Power? Als ich auf 20m umschaltete sah es ganz anders aus. Gute Empfangswerte, gute Rapporte. Etwa 50 QSO kamen in das Log, ODX war VE2JCW.
Der eiskalte Wind zerrte aber doch an der Kondition und ich machte dann bald qrt.
Ein Video, das ich zur Aktivität gemacht hatte, ist leider völlig unbrauchbar – es sind fast nur Windgeräusche zu hören. Schade … beim nächsten Mal klappt es hoffentlich besser.

Today I wanted to test my new HA5IW SOTA PA for the FT-817ND. At home it was very successful. With 0.5w input it emits 8-9w, with 1.0w input = 15w out. 2.5w in = 25w out.I qualified the Kleeberg (DA/NI-275) with 4 DL => U.S.A. QSO on 10m, then some fun QSOs on 40m i.e. with Tom DL1DVE . I used the MP-1 antenna. Next weekend (wx depending) I will make another test with a small carbon fishing rod.
